My College Journey: From Uncertainty to Success

When I graduated from high school, I was just like many students-unsure about what to major in and overwhelmed by the pressure to jump straight into a four-year university. So, I followed the crowd and enrolled in a university, hoping I’d find my passion along the way.

My first year was filled with new interesting class subjects: Business 101, Human Sexuality, College Math, Humanities- Art Renaissance, Micro Biology, Philosophy, Voice Over Speech, Math 220 and English 101. I passed my classes but nothing really clicked as to what I wanted to do. Then came the financial reality check: over $17,000 in tuition for just one year, and I still didn’t know what I wanted to do.

The university wouldn’t let me register for the next semester until I figured out how to pay off this debt. The thought of taking out massive student loans without a clear direction was daunting.That’s when I made a life-changing decision: I transferred to community college.

Why Community College Was the Best Choice for Me

Switching to community college was a game-changer. I could pay my tuition with a part-time job, which meant I didn’t have to worry about piling up student debt. The smaller class sizes and supportive teachers allowed me to explore different subjects at my own pace, without the pressure of huge financial commitments.

I worked closely with my academic advisor to ensure my credits would transfer back to a four-year school. This guidance was invaluable-not only did it keep me on track, but it also helped me clarify my goals. It took me a little longer than some to finish my associate’s degree, but that extra time was a blessing. It gave me the space to discover my true interests.

Finding My Passion and Saving Thousands

During my time at community college, I discovered a love for writing and technology. Once I knew what I wanted, I transferred back to a four-year university and completed my bachelor’s degree in journalism. Best of all, I did it in less than five years and at a fraction of the cost-nowhere near the $100,000 I could have spent if I’d stayed at the university the whole time. Because I saved so much, I was even able to pursue my master’s degree without financial stress. In addition, I was working part-time bought a used car and was able to save money staying at my parents house.

No Regrets-Just Gratitude

Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. I made friends, joined clubs, and gained valuable experiences at both schools. Choosing community college first gave me the time, support, and financial freedom to find the career I love. At the end of the day, it’s my degree and my future-not anyone else’s opinion. If you do take this route consider applying to some of the certifications STEM programs city colleges offer like Radiology, Dentistry, IT and Welding.

If you’re unsure about your path after high school, don’t be afraid to consider community college. It might just be the smartest, least stressful, and most rewarding route to your dream career. Visit and tour your city community college. See if it’s the right choice for you.
